Hello everyone and welcome to pontos fathom hobbies a channel that explores existing games figure paintings storage solutions and the mythos behind some of the games i'm going to be doing today a walk-through play-through of eldritch horror i've got the prelude card for cities in ruin so i've got those rules included and i've got some other videos on the channel already that cover my storage solution for the complete eldritch horror and all of the expansion packs so i'll leave a link for that if you're interested and also some a video of some mods that we're going to use in the game today i'm using the mod of final mythos and forgotten endings and i'll kind of go into those when i talk about the setup in this video so yeah so what we'll do in this video is i've done the main setup but i'll walk through the scenarios we'll talk about our old one yog-sothoth i'll walk through the stories of the characters we'll read the prelude card and i think that'll be a good summary for step one i would like to also mention just briefly some of the inspiration of this channel is for for this month we're going to be doing a lot of lovecraft so i'm going to be covering eldritch horror this month also cthulhu death may die i'll be doing an unboxing for that i'll be doing a live painting of the figures and also go through my cthulhu wars game and storage solution as well as a figure painting so i'll have those other videos upcoming right now i just kind of wanted to go into august moldenhauer's genealogy of cthulhu this is a great set of very bizarre books where it's the idea of it is are some journals inspired by lovecraft that are claiming lovecraft is real genealogy of cthulhu sort of explores those documents and it links a lot of lovecraftian lore to actual real history and that's kind of a great line blur there the psychoanalysis of real yet a second volume this one goes into some purported necronomicon fragments and does a deep study of the relieden language and some of those phrases that are so familiar to us in lovecraft's writing and it also takes a pass at translating what some of these cthulhu and dialect spells are about dead cthulhu dreaming and and sort of its its relations to the overall mythos finally you've got the archaeology of yog-sothoth which is just pure madness as you would figure with any book regarding yog-sothoth who is the subject of our game today so i thought it was appropriate it talks about things in the text odd fragments and properties of analysis of the text some of which are biological and virulent others which are perhaps maps towards locations in the cosmos and it keeps going from there it's just a very intense and mad selection of yog sothothery as lovecraft would say so i will leave the links to these they would help support the channel so i appreciate the shameless plug.

let's jump into the setup so as i said i'm going to use the eldritch horror main rules we've got the game set up and i've also picked the prelude card which requires us to use cities and ruins which is a great it's just another great complexity to add to the game so i'm using a lot of mechanisms in this game i wouldn't say it's a it's a basic game there's a lot of great videos out there that i'll show you how to set up and do a basic walkthrough i'm kind of assuming that you'll you understand the game but i'm gonna explain things as we go along so to start here with i'll walk through the card setup we've already got our gate tokens set up here shuffled we've spawned our first gate in london we've picked our three investigators who we'll get into later i've got the prelude card which i'll read and then we've got our location this is actually belongs here we've got our expedition is in the himalayas we've got our portal cards our various encounter cards for the locations based on the map these have shuffled in all the expansions that are relevant to this scenario so i've i've mixed in a lot of those but i've tried to keep it so that things that require the other boards aren't really here so so that's that our mythos cards and then strangely the mythos cards have already been set up by the setup of the mythos deck for yolk sothoth i mentioned earlier that we've got some mods here these are the final mythos cards this is a mod that i have the link for in the description also on board game geeks that was developed and i had printed these out they are cool they're just like mythos cards the idea of these are is if you get through the mythos deck and yoke saw thoth awakens you can pick one of these and they're all just really intense cr i haven't even read them all but i'm going to read through them as as we get to them in the various gameplays i'll do on this channel but they are sort of like the end doom for the character so this kind of final mythos just gives us a you know a real doom card that kind of wraps up the game and i think it's fun in game play i played with my my kids and they were they said the ending could be somewhat anticlimactic so i went ahead and i found that final mythos to help with that anti-climactic ending and then there's another one that we'll talk about is final endings so then we have yogg sawthoth we've got our mystery cards i've got my first mystery card picked we've got our special encounters and our research for the mystery cards here and then as i mentioned the second mod we're playing with is the forgotten endings mod now this is a great mod i have a video that explores this but basically it was created by a designed by a russian eldritch horror player and then the board game geek community has gone ahead and provided russian translations but there isn't there wasn't as yet a card created with the original russian artwork and the translations provided by some other gamers so what i did is i went ahead and created a file a print ready file it's linked out in board game geek i will i will show you the video there's also a video in my channel that goes into the details of of forgotten endings but these are really the two use cases here are the old one wins or the investigators win and it's just sort of a final paragraph you know at the end of the novel that either characterizes the doomsday or the the narrowly of avoided doomsday which is the best we get in an eldritch horror win situation so that'll be fun to play those there's a number of situations there okay so without further ado let's jump into our old one it is yog sothoth he is got a great descriptive paragraph here so let's read through that it says four eons sorcerers have called upon the power of yog-sothoth to bend reality to their will this incomprehensible ancient one exists parallel to all places and times but is bound to the space between dimensions gates between worlds continue to open and more frequently and soon yog-sothoth will be free so that is that yog-sothoth is getting ready to awaken and our intrepid investigators are as follows first we have cephena rousseau she starts in sydney australia and she is the painter and let's read a little of her backstory and we'll also read her i'm using that expansion of of the the special backstory for each character so we'll read through hers as well so safina rousseau though a gifted painter saphina's talents have more often than not capitalized upon to create forgeries of the works of others one such commission that of a surreal alien cityscape called carcosa tested sofina's abilities to their limits determined to increase the work exactly she worked obsessively until it is completion at which time she was suddenly whisked away to the world of the painting waking hours later covered in paint and blood saphina has become determined to discover the secrets of the painted city wow so she is got some experience with going through a portal it seems and she is ready to engage in the quest that will work with yogg-sathoth's potential awakening so let's talk about safina rousseau's special condition it's called calling you walk between worlds as you paint drawing inspiration from all across the cosmos taking care not to misstep when you spend an improvement token you may place that token on this card when there are three improvement tokens on this card discard this card and gain the painted world reward so this is great so she can use her increase in improvement to solve her personal mystery but then there's a a a there's a good condition called the painted world reward but then there's a a bad view lost reality consequence so at the end of the encounter phase if there are five or more gates on the game board discard this card and gain the lost reality consequence so cephena has some powers to turn her improvements sort of into artistic impression so her artistic impression helps her improve and then her game play is rewarded as well and we get that special painted world reward unfortunately as the game pro progresses and the gates open she can be lost in reality so she's somewhat susceptible to the the awakening old one next up is joe diamond the private eye he starts out in san francisco the dame who hired joe was square and the job seemed easy on the surface she paid in advance to have joe find some codger and deliver a crate but joe does not walk into situations without knowing the score this codger was a member of the silver twilight lodge and that crate had been stolen from a museum in istanbul like a sucker joe went to the cops for his trouble he got a broken nose and a dead client and somebody stole his cargo now joe is ready for a little payback great so joe diamond private eye and let's read his personal quest here it says finish the job the case that you got into that got the case that got you into this mess remains unsolved near as you can tell you are the only one left that knows anything about it the case started with you and one way or another it's going to end with you when a mystery is solved discard this card and gain the hard-boiled reward so that's great so when we solve this mystery that we'll read in a bit kick off he gets the hard-boiled reward but the unfortunate consequence is that at the end of the encounter phase if there are clues on the game board equal to or greater than characters plus six discard this card again the cold case consequence okay so as we see we already have two so if we get up to three four five six and three if we get up to nine clues on the board he sort of loses out so that's his so there's a race to get these clues solved and then finally we have rita young the athlete reedy young starts out in shanghai i've got her here her back story is clocks do not lie in the past people said hurtful things to rita they threatened her but since she started running competitively rita has only cared about the clock most of the time it says that reed is faster than the rest it says she is stronger and has trained harder now she competes around the world and has attracted some unwanted attention the prejudices of certain esoteric cults cannot tolerate her successes they plan to make an example of her but they will have to catch her and the clock says they cannot okay so she is our athletic runner she's driven by the clock she's a competitor and she's got some and she's also our group leader so let's read her back story it says through prejudice when times have been tough you've kept your head high sure it was just people before but people can be monsters of a sort anyway this is your time when you defeat a non-epic monster during combat encounter place that monster on this card then if there is total toughness of monsters on the card is 10 or greater discard this card and gain the comeback reward when you have only one health or sanity discard this card and gain the leave me alone consequence okay so she if her strength and weakness gets too low she sort of retreats into herself and gets that leave me alone but if she because she's a fighter and she's got a high strength she can collect monsters and get some benefit from that okay so that is that i will read the prelude card now and it says the fall of man you emerge from the rubble of your home the most recent casualty of the latest calamity you do not feel how you could you don't you do not feel how you think anyone who just had their home would feel should feel you you survey the wreckage hardly acknowledging the wailing sirens and screams of the injured drifting on the world there must be a reason for all of it punishment for humanity's misdeeds punishment for humanity's arrogance and pride you watch a young woman desperately digging at the remains of her home and you wonder if there's anything worth saving the curtain is falling on the age of man and you do not possess the means to stop it deep down you were not even sure that you would after a resolving setup place one eldritch token on the green space of the omen track during the game when the omen advances to the green space of the omen track draw and resolve a disaster so i think when we go around once that's when we're gonna place that so here's our this is our cities and ruins expansion and we have as a result the ruin markers in play and we have the disaster and the ruin encounter cards so if your city gets ruined so we have some time before the first disaster so i think the time will be of the essence let's finally wrap up this intro to the game with a reading from the young sothoth first mystery i'd shuffled all these cards beforehand i mean excluding the mythos cards which were shuffled and decked out i again i won't i didn't go through the all the details of the setup because it's quite long there are lots of videos on youtube that you can do a setup but i will explain somewhat of the rules as we go along and mostly that'll be following the the rule cards so i'll do that on turn one so let's kick this off with our mystery yolksothof where the old ones broke through yog-soth struggles to free itself from the space between dimensions tearing holes in our reality in the process when an investigator closes a gate he may discard two spells to seal the rift and place that gate on this card at the end of the mythos phase if there are gates on this card equal to half the investigators return all gate tokens on this card to the game box and solve this mystery okay so we need to do a couple things to solve this which is complicated we need to have spells we currently don't have any spells so we've got to gain spells which we could do in places like arkham we can do it in buenos aires we can do it potentially going through portals and potentially solving clues so there's lots of places where we can get some spell rewards and then we need two spells and then we have to on the turn that we close the gate the investigator with the two spells has to be the gate closer as well so somebody's going to be very busy maybe our runner will be good for this because she's able to get to places quickly so it's collecting spells and and then and then let's see if we can do that so that's our first mystery it seems like a tough one so let's i think we'll call it a turn a setup now and let's go to the next
